The Free State of Thuringia offers a wide range of excellent science and research facilities. In addition to 14 universities and universities of applied sciences, this includes 19 non-university institutions of renowned German scientific communities, such as the Max Planck Society, the Fraunhofer Society, the Leibniz Association, the Helmholtz Society and eight business-related research institutes and development service providers with a total of approximately 10,000 scientists. Their work, especially in the high-level technologies of optics & photonics, automotive, mechanical engineering & metal processing, microsystems and nanotechnology, sensor technology, ITC and live sciences, is also specifically geared to the requirements of small and medium-sized enterprises and contributes significantly to Thuringia's excellent reputation as a technology location.
